A stalwart of the Global Underground DJ contingent, Nick Warren returns to the series following the huge success of his ‘Paris’ CD in 2007. He’s sold over 110,000 GU compilations in the UK alone over his 11 year history with the label, on each occasion coupling musical integrity and guaranteed commercial sales success.

Peruvian capital Lima is the base for his latest installment, and for the first time Warren has compiled an entirely exclusive track list to capture the sound and ambience of this historic former Incan city. He’s sourced tracks far and wide, making this a truly unique mix, and one that showcases his ability as curator and DJ par excellence.

Based around the Global Underground party captured in the album’s beautiful stylised artwork, the GU Lima mix is a sonic missile – simple, direct, and deadly. There is a definite cosmopolitan atmosphere about it akin with the city itself; as the South American continent, and its hot spots of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay, has become a quiet giant within the international club scene, so Peru hasn’t been left untouched.

Beginning quietly with Paul Roger’s ambient ethereal intro, CD1 quickly plunges into the bleepy techno of Nils Nuerenberg’s ‘Seduction’. The pulsing house groove of Kruse and Nuernberg’s ‘An Why E’ brings an edge of menace, before Jarius Miller’s ‘Botnet’ continues the trip. Culminating in the ghostly finale of 16 Bit Lolitas’ mix of Astrid Suryanto’s grandiose ‘Distant Bar’, CD1 sets a tone that makes this one of Nick’s most cohesive Global Underground mixes to date.

CD2 begins with Alex Dolby’s ‘Long Beach’, a track that drops a funky string refrain onto twisting electronic flutters. The squelchy, minimalist bounce of Chris Croat Yvel & Tristan’s ‘Panama’ clicks into Nicolo Vivarelli’s ‘I Am Trying’, marked by distant radio voices edging nervously in and out of a disco bassline. Thomas Sagstad’s ‘Castillian’ builds energy with its relentless string refrain with Spanish guitar flourishes, while a flurry of vocals arrive on the The Steals vs. Graffiti’s ‘Sinner’ (Leama and James Davis ‘Graffiti’ Mix). Warren brings out some big guns for the finale; Analogue People In A Digital World’s ‘Before The Wind’ drives its relentless groove home before segueing neatly into the closer, Perc’s ‘Bosworth’.

‘Lima’ is one of Nick’s finest GU exploits to date – and we’d expect nothing less from Bristol’s biggest house export.

Beautiful melodies, stabbing basslines, funky weirdness, slick production and gorgeous female vocals highlights Momentum; the newest release from San Francisco’s own legends of west coast/progressive breaks, Momu. This tag-team is comprised of JD Moyer (AKA Jondi from Jondi & Spesh) and Frisco’s first-ever progressive breaks DJ, Mark Musselman.

After joining forces in 2001, Momu’s debut EP “This Is Momu” and subsequent tracks “Sunsicle” (Bedrock Breaks), “Bring It On Back” (Spundae Records) and “The Dive” (championed by Nick Warren his Global Underground Reykjavik CD) helped define an emerging genre that eventually became known as progressive breaks. 2006’s self-titled debut artist album received critical acclaim internationally while also making Momu’s music essential in the crates (CD wallets) of names including John Digweed, Sasha, Annie Nightingale, James Zabiela, DJ Hyper, Adam Freeland, Ashley Casselle, Lee Burridge, Cass, Hernan Cattaneo, DJ19, Pako & Frederik, and Hybrid. The album did exceptionally well commercially too, scoring licensing deals for the US’s most popular TV show “CSI” and the world’s biggest video game at the time “Dance Dance Revolution.”

Unfettered by anything except the breakbeat form itself, Momu has always fearlessly experimented, often dangerously veering either in front of or off to the side of mainstream styles. Momentum is no exception, flirting with a pop format in tracks like “Window” and “Truckin” but also including math-nerd experimentation with the fibonacci sequence (both rhythmically and tonally) in “Just Listen” and layered minimalistic ultra-high frequency melodic lines in “X500.” Momentum also features Momu’s favorite vocalist Alysoun Quinby (featured on Momu’s hit “The Dive”) on many tracks (and on the album cover). Bassist J-Bone complements the electronic dimension with live instrumentation and tight funk lines on several tracks.

Momu may have broken the “progressive-breaks” mold it helped create - Momentum is much more playful and uplifting than the genre may allow - but Momu’s signature sonic eccentricity, insanely high production values, and larger than life hooks are still front and center.

Both Jondi and Mark are residents at San Francisco’s favorite mid-weekly, Qoöl, where fans can hear them regularly testing out new and unusual breakbeat frequencies.

Progressive giant John Digweed will celebrate the tenth anniversary of his Bedrock imprint in October with the release of Bedrock 10: Past, Present, Future.

As the title indicates, the compilation will see Diggers taking stock of where the label has been, where it is and where it’s going. The first two CD’s are mixed by the man himself, with the initial mix showcasing remixes of classic Bedrock tunes. The second does the same, but leavens it with some recently released tracks like Christian Smith’s recent epic “Flyertalk.” Disc three, on the other hand, contains unreleased tracks that should have fans of the label in a bit of a tizzy, including Guy Gerber’s remix of Bedrock’s “Santiago.”

In addition to the release, the Hastings native will further celebrate with a show at the recently opened matter, playing a lengthy set in Room 1, while Tom Middleton and Funk D’Void take over Room 2.

Bedrock will release the compilation Bedrock 10: Past, Present, Future on October 13, 2008.
